Precautions for Adding Food Grade Sodium Tripolyphosphate (STPP) in Food Processing

Editor:CDchemTime:2026-10-28

Processed foods greatly enrich modern diets. However, widespread misinformation often makes consumers nervous about food additives. As a professional manufacturer of sodium tripolyphosphate, Chongqing Chuandong Chemical would like to clarify: food grade STPP is safe when used properly, and there is no need for unnecessary concern.

Sodium tripolyphosphate improves the colour, aroma and taste of food, helps adjust nutritional performance and extends shelf life. When food grade STPP is dosed strictly following food production requirements and relevant food additive regulations, it is within the safe intake range for the human body.

In the food industry, STPP acts as a quality improver and water retention agent for canned goods, fruit juice drinks, dairy products, soy milk and more. It tenderises canned ham and softens bean skins in broad bean cans. It can also serve as a water softener and thickener.

Per GB 2760‑2011 Hygienic Standard for the Use of Food Additives:

Maximum dosage: 1.0 g/kg for canned food, fruit juice and fruit‑flavoured beverages, vegetable protein beverages

Maximum dosage: 5.0 g/kg for dairy products, poultry products, meat products, ice cream and instant noodles

  For compound phosphate blends:

  Canned meat products: ≤1.0 g/kg

  Condensed milk: ≤0.50 g/kg

Combined use with sodium pyrophosphate and sodium phosphate: ≤5 g/kg

Western-style cooked and smoked ham (per GB 13101‑1991): ≤5 g/kg; for western canned ham, the limit can be appropriately adjusted up to 8 g/kg calculated as phosphate.

Chuandong Chemical supplies qualified food grade sodium tripolyphosphate. Always check local regulatory limits and carry out dosage tests before formal production.
